Macedonian & Slovene at the British Council Two Languages, One Passion for Sharing

My presentations for the #BritishCouncil went wonderfully!

I had the pleasure of introducing two fascinating languages and cultures Macedonian and Slovene, and, as always, the language came with stories, history, and a few moments where you have to carefully choose your words.

Let’s start with Macedonian. The country’s official name is North Macedonia, but the language is Macedonian. Yes, I know… this immediately opens the door to many questions: historical questions, political questions, and discussions that could easily turn a language presentation into a three-hour documentary. So, if you are looking for a translator, a teacher, or a dictionary — search for Macedonian, not “North Macedonian”. Your search results (and your Macedonian teacher) will thank you.

But today I decided to do something radical: focus on the language itself. The beauty of Macedonian lies in its sounds, grammar, expressions, literature, and the people who speak it. As for certain historical figures whose name begins with “Alexander”… let’s just say that’s where I suddenly remember I have another appointment. 😉

And a little linguistic fun from the Slovene side: Slovenia is often said to look like a hen on the map. 🐔 Slovene grammar behaves a little like one too — just when you think you have caught it, it runs off in a completely unexpected direction! 😂
