Our Language/s: Multilingualism in the Balkans at the British Library (video)

What happens when language becomes more than a way of communicating, when it shapes identity, belonging, and even exclusion?

At #British Library we explored the rich linguistic landscape of the Balkan diaspora, asking how languages that are often considered “non-standard” or marginalised influence the ways people experience identity, difference, and discrimination.

The discussion challenged ethnonationalist narratives and highlighted a different perspective: one where linguistic diversity is not a problem to be solved, but a strength to be celebrated.

The conversation reminded us that languages do much more than preserve words. They carry memories, histories, migration stories, and lived experiences that are too often left out of official narratives. By sharing these voices, we create space for greater understanding, solidarity, and dialogue across communities.

One of the greatest joys of events like this is seeing complex sociolinguistic ideas become accessible through personal stories. After all, language is never only about linguistics, it is about people. ❤️
