I represented CIOL at this year’s Language Show, thanks to the invitation from John Worne, CEO of the Chartered Institute of Linguists!
My talk was Translating balkan food – A culinary journey through identity and tradition.
Food is more than sustenance, it’s a deep expression of cultural identity, shaped by history, geography, and tradition. In my talk, I explored the complex process of translating the diverse culinary traditions of the Balkan region, where every dish carries layers of meaning beyond its ingredients.
Through the lens of translation, I examined how food serves as a conduit for cultural heritage, revealing the etymological roots, identity markers, and socio-cultural contexts embedded in these dishes. Successfully conveying their essence goes beyond linguistic accuracy, it requires an understanding of the stories, traditions, and emotions tied to each meal.
As translators, we are cultural mediators, bridging gaps and fostering cross-cultural appreciation. Balkan cuisine is not just about flavours; it’s about the people, their histories, and the connections formed around shared meals.
